Beth Galbreath teaches Biblical storytelling online and leads an online guild (support group of tellers) through the website BeADisciple.com, a project of Bishop Richard and Julia Wilke. The classes use standard college online learning software, Blackboard. Classes are scheduled frequently during fall, winter and spring. Online Biblical storytelling workshops “Thanks again for a wonderful class. I am looking forward to the sequel. I had no idea that an online class could be so engaging.”- Biblical Storytelling 1, Fall 2009 |

Biblical Storytelling I teaches the basic art of learning a Biblical text by heart, in order to bring it alive for others, over the course of two weeks. A self-paced class, allowing folks from all over the world to log in when it's convenient for them. Biblical Storytelling II offers a three-week opportunity to dig deeper into the art - enhancing our telling with props and costumes, digital storytelling, tricks for learning tough passages, telling the Bible's tales of terror, Holy Land geography and political-social context, Biblical storytelling as spiritual practice, first-person stories, midrash, voice and body care, working with children, chancel drama, team and tandem telling, using story liturgically, and more. One online sharing session for this class will be set according to participants' schedules; there is no such group session for Biblical Storytelling I. In both classes, students receive daily feedback on assignments and regular encouragement from Rev. Galbreath and classmates. Although the classes are "self-paced" - that is, participants set their own time to check in, to post and to practice, folks will enjoy them more if they do something every day. CEU's are available on request. Biblical Storytelling Weekly covers the same techniques for learning and telling as Biblical Storytelling I, but participants meet "face to face" online through Blackboard Collaborate software, and they begin to learn five stories over the six weeks instead of studying one in depth. Participants must be able to attend the meeting at a set time. A webcam and high-speed connection are required; a headset is strongly recommended.
"I found the whole class fantastic. I have a 20 page document (small print) called Gems of Biblical Storytelling II that I have made from excerpts from postings and responces. And this is just one of my documents. Will I be able to use learnings from this class in my ministry and my life? Yes, Yes, Yes. This is already happening in our charge [related congregations]." "Something clicked for me and I went from being frustrated while trying to read Scripture word for word and feeling inept to being able to tell the Scripture as a story. "I am a pastor. I used the stories every week
in either the children's sermon or the regular sermon. "I praise God for these past weeks and the classes. - Biblical Storytelling Weekly, winter 2011 |
